Despite his game-winning playoff performance and mild success in the NHL in the second half of last season, rumors are abound this week that former Hobey Baker finalist Gustav Nyquist will start the 2013-14 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.While I’m sure Grand Rapids is lovely this time of year, what in are the Wings thinking?

Nyquist had 60 points in 58 games last season with the Griffins and added seven more in the playoffs. In his first full season with the Griffs (2011-12), he had 58 points in 56 games. Do you think he really needs more practice?

“If you (think about) that, you just stress yourself even more,” Nyquist told the Detroit News. “I can only go out and do my best and play the game I play and show them I want to be up here.”

According to the Detroit News, 17 forwards are in Wings camp this month and 14 will be Detroit-bound.

A major advantage for Detroit to send the former Black Bear to Grand Rapids: Nyquist is the only forward with minor league options available and wouldn’t need to clear waivers, according to the Macomb Daily.
