First-year coach, and 1993 National Championship game hero, Jim Montgomery has started the official “Kariya Count.”That’s how many times Montgomery mentions his former linemate in a quote.
When asked if he was worried that his Denver Pioneers were ranked outside the top 15 to start the season — the first time for Denver since 200, according to the Denver Post — Montgomery responded to the Post:
“But I think more importantly, preseason polls mean nothing. I remember back with the Avalanche in 2002, they added (Teemu) Selanne and (Paul) Kariya and everyone was ordering their rings. It didn’t transpire that way. (The reality) is with what happens in the journey, not what’s on paper.”
After an exhibition game, Montgomery begins his coaching career Oct. 11 with a home weekend series against Merrimack.
Montgomery is Maine’s all-time leader in points, assists and games played.
