Nyquist fuels Grand Rapids blowout

Gustav Nyquist didn’t start the season in Detroit, but more night’s like last night will see Nyquist in a Wings uniform soon enough.Nyquist picked up the Griffins’ first goal of the game, on the powerplay, and added two assists as Grand Rapids blasted Rochester (BUF) 8-1.

Elsewhere on the ice, defenseman will O’Neill didn’t register a point as the St. John’s IceCaps fell 4-3 to Providence in their season opener.

In the NHL, the New York Black Be — err, Islanders — picked up a win against New Jersey in a shootout for their first win of the season.

Jimmy Howard stopped 23 of 25 shots as the Red Wings overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Carolina in overtime. It is Howard’s second win of the year. Through those two games, Howard has a 1.48 GAA and a .933 save percentage.

Several Maine alums will start their AHL seasons tonight, last year’s Black Bear captain Joey Diamond, a member of Scott Pellerin’s Bridgeport Soundtigers.
