Montgomery’s Denver debut stellar

You can’t help but wonder if Jim Montgomery had visions of romping Merrimack 14-2 during the 1993 season when his Denver Pioneers took the ice against the Warriors over the weekend. For a Denver team that carries with it high expectations — six consecutive NCAA appearances — Montgomery and the Pioneers got off on the right foot, at the expense of Merrimack and Hockey East.

Denver’s defense and goaltending led the way with a 1-0 win Friday night and followed that up with a 4-0 victory on Saturday.

Montgomery’s bunch took advantage of a lack of discipline by the Warriors with three power-play goals on Saturday, including a 5-on-3 goal to open up the scoring.
