Howard shines to notch third win; Nyquist secures win for Grand Rapids

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard made 32 stops and allowed two goals in a 5-2 Detroit win Saturday against Philadelphia, giving Howard his third win of the season. Howard sported a pink mask and pink pads in support of breast cancer awareness.

Ben Bishop remains day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Gustav Nyquist came through int he clutch for the Grand Rapids Griffins Saturday night as he scored the lone goal in a shootout against Hamilton to give the Griffins the 4-3 win. Nyquist also had a goal and an assist in the game.

Will O’Neill registered a goal for St. John’s Saturday night, and Spencer Abbott picked up assists on a game-tying and the game-winning goal for Toronto as the Marlies beat the visiting IceCaps 6-3 in AHL action.

Maine hockey looks to reverse trend of losing non-conference openers

The University of Maine men’s hockey team hasn’t won back-to-back non-conference games to open a season since 2006, when the black bears begun their Frozen Four run with a 7-1-1 record.

Red Gendron and the Black Bears will travel to Canton, N.Y. this weekend to open the regular season against St. Lawrence of the ECAC — the first time Maine will play a true road game against SLU in 10 years. Continue reading

Bishop stellar in Tampa Bay win

Ben Bishop earned the Tampa Bay Lightning its first win of the season Saturday night, standing tall in a shootout to help secure a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, the defending Stanley Cup champions.
